Along with regional films from all over India, it also owns some of the biggest soundtracks to Bollywood films, including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Devdas.

Since its inception, T-Series has released soundtracks for over 10,000 foreign films, making it India’s leading provider of music content. The collection includes songs from regional Indian films such as Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, and Tamil, as well as Hindi-language films.

2019 saw T-Series purchase the worldwide rights to several well-known songs from Universal Music Group, such as Sia Furler’s “Chandelier” and Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” suggesting a continued push into markets outside of India.

T-Series made history in 2020, becoming the first YouTube channel to reach 100 million subscribers. This achievement not only contributed to YouTube’s success in India, but also provided digital natives with a means of independently discovering new artists and releases on the platform.

T-series is still at the forefront of innovation for Indian local artists today, forming alliances with international superstars and anticipating expanded opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration among globally recognized producers and songwriters from various countries.

T-series Founder

One of the biggest film studios and music production companies in India is T-Series. In 1983, Gulshan Kumar founded it. He began his career as a menial record vendor in the Chandni Chowk neighborhood of Delhi and rose to prominence as a businessman, music producer, and film mogul.

Gulshan Kumar’s interest in music began in his early years, when he and his musician father would play a variety of instruments at home. He began making cassettes under the Super Cassettes Industries brand, which was later renamed T-series after becoming very successful.

He became an overnight celebrity after releasing the album Aashiqui in 1988, with songs like “Dheere Dheere Se” becoming well-known throughout India. Throughout his career, Gulshan Kumar broke records by writing some of the most romantic songs, including Yaadon Ki Baaraat’s Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko. He also gained international recognition for directing successful films such as Sarfarosh (1999).

Even after he died in 1997 from violence related to terrorism, T-series is still one of the top entertainment companies and has had a significant influence on the current state of Bollywood music.

Legal issues

T-Series filed a lawsuit against YouTube in November 2007 alleging that the platform was violating its copyright by enabling users to post free music videos. The Delhi High Court granted T-Series an interim injunction, preventing YouTube from further infringing on its copyrights. In January 2011, T-Series and YouTube reached an out-of-court agreement.

T-Series filed a complaint with the Delhi High Court in April 2019 to have two diss tracks released by PewDiePie, “Congratulations” and “Bitch Lasagna,” taken down from YouTube. T-Series claimed the songs were “defamatory, disparaging, insulting, and offensive.

“On April 8, 2019, the court granted a temporary injunction in favor of T-Series, blocking access to the diss tracks on YouTube in India, despite Kjellberg’s claim that they were “done in good fun”. T-Series and PewDiePie were said to have reached an out-of-court settlement of their legal dispute in August 2019.

Gulshan Kumar’s Death

In 1997, hired killers murdered the music mogul. Abdul Rauf, alias Daud Merchant, was convicted in 2002 of Gulshan Kumar’s murder. He departed India in 2009 following his release from the Bombay High Court. He was extradited from Bangladesh in 2016. According to a Hindustan Times report, he is presently being held at the high-security Arthur Road prison in Mumbai.

As the Chairman and MD of T-Series, Gulshan Kumar’s son Bhushan Kumar is currently carrying on his legacy. As of 2023, T-Series has 247 million subscribers on YouTube, the most of any channel.
